Delaware Name Change

Posted on October 29, 2010.
Delaware Name Change17 year old male wants to change his years surname in the state of Delawarea

I'm 17 and I'm wanting to change my surname to a surname. I wear my biological father last name but do not want to carry his name. I'll take on my grandmothers maiden name. Anyway, I was wondering if I could change my name with my bio fathers consent. I have no connection with him what so ever. My mother has full custody of me. The only thing I get from my father is a support check every month. Please help me, I'm so confused!

Depending on what county you live in - the forms you need are here and you can ask your questions by local court clerks.

The rules vary - typically, a minor must obtain permission to change its name. Your county may have rules which work around the property.

You'll probably have to get the consent of your mother at least. However, if you wait a year, you can change your name to what you want, and nobody can stop you.

You will need the consent of your father. It is most likely on your birth certificate and even if your mother has full custody, your father still has rights. We should have file his papers for him, so he had no doubt the object, and it would probably be a long process. Just wait till you're 18 and then you can do what you want.
