Any help is appreciated. Thank you
When requesting a marriage license, you must use the name that is on your driver's license and social security card. To do anything else is fraud.
If you do not want to use your maiden name or her last name after you marry, you must apply to change your name.
Each of you must file documents and pay a fee. In some states, the tax depends on the length of the new name, a letter in some places.
Now you can save money and change any of your names legal means before marriage, then others could change other than the name that you are married.
Whatever your legal name is the time you get the marriage license is what you put there. EX: The women use their maiden name.
If you both want to change your surname to share you both need to go to court for a name change before the wedding to prove it is not for fraudulent purposes. It is another name that you are either born with. Your Social Security number remains the same as if the benefits remain the same. I had to go to court when I wanted to remove the name of my former husband and went back to my maiden name. I am remarried. but he chose to keep my maiden name for professional reasons only and pedigree.
If the groom is changing its name, then you definitely have to do before you marry. The bride may change her name later, but both names on the marriage license must be correct because they will be your legal name. Remember that you will also have to make these changes with the Social Security office, the state DMV and your passport too (especially if the honeymoon will be outside the U.S.) and that may be a pain.
Plus there may be local or national requirements, too. Check all of this first and do all the necessary paperwork as soon as possible so that you do not have to do something last minute before the wedding. Congratulations to you both!
